Palma de Mallorca beachfront hotels on the sand
Of the five hotels on this page, the three on the sand are in Cala Major, about 4 km west of the cathedral: Be Live Adults Only La Cala sits on the beach with direct access, Be Live Experience Costa Palma stands just behind it, and Be Live Adults Only Marivent is a short walk along the pavement. The other two face the sea differently. Portixol Hotel & Restaurant looks over Portixol harbour east of the centre, with the seafront promenade in front, while Portella Palma is an old-town hotel near the cathedral, about a 9-minute walk from Can Pere Antoni beach and not on the sand. The five average 8.5 out of 10 across 7,784 guest reviews. I would book Cala Major for swimming and Portixol for a sea-facing city stay.
Palma is a city with a bay rather than a beach resort. The old town, the cathedral and the harbour front pull you inland, and most of its best-rated hotels are townhouses in the old-town lanes, a walk or a bus ride from any sand. Beach life happens at the edges: Cala Major to the west, with hotels right behind the cove, Portixol and Ciutat Jardí to the east along the traffic-free promenade, and beyond them, near the airport, Playa de Palma, the long resort beach that runs from Can Pastilla towards S'Arenal.
Which Palma beach hotel fits your trip
Palma's central beach, Can Pere Antoni, lies below the seafront road and the cycle path, so a sea view in the centre rarely means sand under your balcony. Cala Major is different: a sheltered cove of fine sand roughly 200 to 250 metres long, with a row of hotels right behind it and a Blue Flag regained for 2026.
Cala Major is the one stretch of Palma where three of these hotels share a beach. The sand is fine and golden, the water shallow at the edge and usually calm, because headlands close the cove on both sides, and a small central pier splits it in two. It regained its Blue Flag for 2026 and has lifeguards in season. The catch is size: at around 200 to 250 metres it is small and crowded at midday in peak summer, when a pool terrace above the sand becomes the better place to spend the afternoon.
To step from the lobby onto the sand, I would pick Be Live Adults Only La Cala: direct beach access, only 67 rooms, and the Pelicanos beach club on the sand, open roughly from May to October and charged separately. Its spa and gym are at the sister hotel, Marivent. Be Live Experience Costa Palma is the larger option, just behind the beach on Carrer Guillem Díaz-Plaja, with a seasonal pool, balconies and several restaurants, and it welcomes families. Marivent, adults only, sits above the water with sea-view pools, a short walk from the sand.
Portixol Hotel & Restaurant is the sea-facing choice for people who want Palma rather than a resort. It occupies a 1950s building on Portixol harbour beside the old fishing quarter of El Molinar, with sea-view rooms, an outdoor pool, a spa and a restaurant over the port. The small Portixol cove is about 300 metres away, with showers but no sunbed rental. A traffic-free promenade and cycle path runs in front, west to the old town and east to Ciutat Jardí, a sheltered sandy beach of about 450 metres. The centre is about 35 minutes on foot.
Portella Palma is an old-town address, not a beach hotel: it stands on Carrer de la Portella, a few minutes' walk from the cathedral, and the nearest sand, Can Pere Antoni, is about 9 minutes away on foot. Book it for the spa, the hammam and the historic lanes. Arriving is simple from the airport, about 8 km east of the centre: the A1 bus runs to Plaça d'Espanya, where city line 4 continues to Cala Major and Illetes, and a taxi from the airport to Cala Major takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes.
The sea off Palma averages about 26 °C in August and still around 22 °C in October, which makes October my favourite month in Cala Major: the midday crowd has gone, and Be Live Experience Costa Palma's seasonal pool matters less when the sea is this warm. Winter is a different trip. The cove keeps its sand and calm water, but you come for walks around the bay and for the gardens of Marivent Palace, the royal summer residence above the beach, open to the public although the palace is not.
I would pick Be Live Adults Only La Cala for a couple who want to swim before breakfast and doze on the sand: of the hotels on this page, it is the one where you walk out of the lobby onto the beach. Families with young children should look at Be Live Experience Costa Palma instead, because the two other Cala Major hotels are adults only, and the cove's shallow, calm water suits small swimmers. I would not choose Cala Major for nightlife or long beach walks; the cove is short and the old town is a bus ride away. If you want the city first and a swim second, Portixol wins, and Portella is for travellers who rank the cathedral above the sea.

Local tips
- 1From the airport, take the A1 bus to Plaça d'Espanya and change to city line 4 for Cala Major and Illetes; a taxi takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes.
- 2Marivent Palace above Cala Major is the royal family's summer residence: the palace is private, but its sculpture gardens are open to the public and make a shaded walk.
- 3Pelicanos, the beach club on the sand at Be Live Adults Only La Cala, opens roughly from May to October and is charged separately, hotel guests included.
- 4La Cala has no spa of its own: its guests use the spa and gym at the neighbouring Be Live Adults Only Marivent, a short walk along the seafront.
- 5Portixol cove has showers but no sunbed rental, so bring a beach mat, or swim and dry off on the Portixol Hotel pool terrace across the promenade.
- 6Ride the traffic-free cycle path from Portixol: west to the old town and the cathedral, east to the sandy beach of Ciutat Jardí, about 450 metres long.
- 7From Portella Palma, the nearest sand is Can Pere Antoni, about a 9-minute walk; for a proper swimming day, city line 4 takes you to Cala Major.
- 8Choose October for Cala Major if you can: the sea is still around 22 °C, the cove is far quieter at midday and the walk up to the Marivent gardens is cooler.
